Volume vs intensity of physical activity and risk of cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular chronic diseases.

European heart journal·March 29, 2026·PMID 41905344

Why it matters

Understanding whether exercise intensity or volume matters more for preventing specific chronic diseases can guide more efficient physical activity prescriptions. This study quantifies the relative contributions, showing that for many conditions—especially immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, dementia, and cardiovascular outcomes—intensity may be more important than total volume.
