Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation and Hypoxic Burden in Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Secondary Analysis of the STAR Trial.

Why it matters

Hypoxic burden is a physiologic marker linked to cardiovascular risk in OSA. This study shows that hypoglossal nerve stimulation can substantially reduce HB, and that HB improvement correlates with reduced sleepiness even when AHI does not. This challenges sole reliance on AHI for assessing therapeutic response and may refine patient monitoring and counseling.
