Candida in the lower respiratory tract induces barrier disruption in mice and predicts poor outcomes in mechanically ventilated humans.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America·September 29, 2026·PMID 42766739

Why it matters

Candida is frequently recovered from respiratory secretions in critically ill patients, yet its pathogenic role has been unclear. This paper provides mechanistic evidence that Candida albicans directly injures the alveolar barrier and worsens outcomes, especially when co-occurring with bacterial pathogens, which may influence diagnostic and therapeutic considerations in ventilator-associated pneumonia.
