Not all N3 sleep is equal: EEG-defined N3 sleep depth and health-related quality of life in the sleep heart health study.

Sleep medicine·September 18, 2026·PMID 42777560

Why it matters

Deep sleep is often assumed to be restorative based on duration alone, but this study shows that the physiological depth of N3 sleep carries independent prognostic information for health-related quality of life. Clinicians evaluating sleep quality may need to consider not just how much slow-wave sleep occurs, but how deep it is.
