Cohort Studymoderate evidence
Population-level benefits of correctional medications for opioid use disorder.
Journal of substance use and addiction treatment·September 12, 2026·PMID 42731697
Why it mattersIncarcerated individuals face a markedly elevated risk of fatal opioid overdose after release, and correctional settings are a critical but underutilized intervention point. This study provides strong quasi-experimental evidence that comprehensive MOUD access during incarceration can reduce overdose deaths at the population level, with benefits extending beyond those who directly receive medication.
