Epigenetic and 3D genome reprogramming during the aging of the human hippocampus.
Science (New York, N.Y.)·July 23, 2026·PMID 42490474
Why it mattersAging-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases involve hippocampal dysfunction, yet the underlying cell-type-specific regulatory mechanisms are poorly understood. This work provides a detailed molecular map of aging in the human hippocampus, revealing critical transitions in microglial identity, astrocyte loss, and chromatin disorganization that may represent new targets for interventions to preserve brain health.
