Cohort Studyhigh evidence

Estimated preventable fraction of chronic disease attributed to long-term physical activity and diet quality, independent of body weight: a prospective cohort study of three US cohorts.

Lancet regional health. Americas·September 1, 2026·PMID 42395933

Why it matters

Clinicians often focus on BMI as a proxy for lifestyle, but these findings show that physical activity and diet quality substantially reduce chronic disease risk regardless of body weight. This reinforces the importance of counseling patients on healthy behaviors even when weight loss is not achieved or maintained, and cautions against neglecting lifestyle in normal-weight individuals or those using pharmacotherapy for weight reduction.
