Why it matters

FGF21 analogs are already in trials for fatty liver disease, but their impact on alcohol outcomes was unknown. This genetic evidence suggests they may uniquely reduce hazardous drinking and alcohol-related liver injury, addressing a major unmet need in patients with co-occurring alcohol use and metabolic liver disease.
