Intrinsic capacity impairment and incident dementia across three population-based cohorts: a harmonized individual participant data analysis.

The journal of nutrition, health & aging·September 11, 2026·PMID 42727174

Why it matters

Dementia risk stratification in primary care and geriatric settings often relies on cognitive testing alone. This study shows that a simple, multidomain assessment of intrinsic capacity—including psychological and physical domains—provides substantial incremental predictive value. The graded association and improved discrimination support integrating IC into routine assessments for early identification of high-risk older adults.
