Not all previous surgeries are the same: Procedure-specific infection risk in total knee arthroplasty patients with a history of previous knee surgery.

Knee surgery, sports traumatology, arthroscopy : official journal of the ESSKA·September 14, 2026·PMID 42735046

Why it matters

Prior ipsilateral knee surgery is often treated as a uniform risk factor for PJI after TKA, but this study shows risk varies by procedure type and cumulative burden. Orthopedic surgeons can use these procedure-specific odds to refine preoperative risk stratification and counsel patients more accurately about infection risk.
