Arginine Therapy for Sickle Cell Disease Acute Pain Episodes: The STArT Randomized Clinical Trial.

JAMA·August 19, 2026·PMID 42616542

Why it matters

Acute pain episodes are the leading cause of emergency visits and hospitalizations in sickle cell disease, yet no FDA-approved therapy exists. Arginine had shown promise in phase 2 trials, but this definitive trial found no benefit, preventing adoption of an ineffective treatment and redirecting efforts toward other strategies.
